MCs Will Race on Sunday, June 14

Dane County has just released the plan to move to “phase 2” this Monday June 15th.

As a sailing club, MYC has a long-established track record of thinking about our members’ safety. Just as we watch the weather conditions and cancel races if we think our members’ physical safety is at risk, we are also watching the “pandemic conditions.”

When the winds are too high for the MC fleet, and if the MC fleet decides not to sail, some MC sailors will join the E’s as additional deck meat. We know that “weather conditions” affect the safety of fleets differently, and we know that “pandemic conditions” affect the safety of fleets differently.

Math and science tells us that there will be peaks and troughs in the rates of infection, and Dane County is responding to those peaks and troughs with restrictions and relaxations on social distancing. We could go to a “phase 2” and then back to a “phase 1” or forward to “phase 3” depending on local new infection rates.

Single-handed fleets are by the nature of their craft, “socially distant” and MYC typically has one person at a time on the committee boat. Dane County Public Health released a FAQ which identifies single handed fleet racing as “Low risk sports” which can be done under “Phase 1” conditions, and so MYC plans to go ahead with MC fleet racing starting this Sunday, June 14th.

For the Keelboat Fleet, we are starting racing under Phase 2 on Wed June 17th. For restrictions please review the "phase 2" Covid-19 protocol which has MYC's guidelines for competitors: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AKCbnkpr6DA-1YmKbndfiFyDkdKvy0QCtaXC0HyLcto/edit

Remember, always consider “pandemic conditions” as seriously as you’d consider “wind conditions” for safe sailing.

The board will be making announcements as “pandemic conditions” change via email by our Commodore Pete Mooney.
