2024 Bill Bentsen Rules Initiative

John Strassman returns to lead a panel of RC personnel, Judge personnel and representative sailors for a day of "how tos" for home lake and regatta level race course management. John will moderate but the audience will direct questions or topics throughout the day. An outline is presented below but the vision for this day is to answer YOUR questions; listen to YOUR ideas; brainstorm with YOU!

AM session – Home lake racing discussion

• Low physical resources
• What do sailors expect
• Less experienced due to rotational method utilized by majority of clubs
• How to prioritize the PROs efforts
• Accuracy of mark placement
• Configuration of lake – what/when to adjust
• What and when is it important to change a course with limited resources – tricks or suggestions
• What role or input does local fleet rep have
• Communication to fleet
• Is Buoy Zone an asset which improves mark and line placement?
• Judges – who writes SIs and how do they differ from regatta level – Scoring, participation, throwouts
• Multiple fleet starts

PM Session – Regatta racing

• Three or four-boat system – what do you gain?
• Accuracy of mark placement
• When to postpone, recall or abandon
• Starts – method to call OCS
• How close are we to Vakaros for our events
• How to progress to penalty flags and why
• Communication with fleet but also other RC boats
• Change of marks – how much tolerance?
• Competitors briefing – what is important
• PRO – do you need input from sailors; what is beneficial input
• How to use judges effectively – build the team!
